cool/uncool
Reblogs

As you’ve undoubtedly noticed (and openly lamented, i’m sure) nothing has been posted here for a long time.  i haven’t been doing anything with cool/uncool for a long time, unfortunately.  i ran out of funding for the zine and thus had to halt production.  however, i am thinking about getting back into it after a too-long forced hiatus.  i still don’t have the funds, but i have accumulated enough passion for the project and, really, that’s all you need.  in anticipation for what i hope will be a continuation of cool/uncool, i am going to reblog all the issues on my personal tumblr (which i have been using far, far more often).  you can still read anything here, but i will also have them over at matthewtowles.tumblr.com.

until i make a new issue, check out the old ones and tell me (preferrably at my personal tumblr) what you wanna see in the new issues (or were totally sick of in the originals).

hope everyone is doing swell!

<3 matthew

everyone should go to this show tonight!  featuring the Smigel Brothers, A Book About Elephants, a new project from David Barclay (!), and new friend of the zine Walter Mitty (& his Makeshift Orchestra)!  it’s gonna be a super fun fun fun night!

in other news, i have no money and thus no way to produce the zine for the time being.  all previous issues have been self-financed, which means all my money went to those and feeding myself.  so once i get more money, i will make another zine.  but, until then…….?

We’re All Going to This, Guys:

i just found out that Jonathon Richman is playing at Detroit Bar on Thursday, December 9th.  Whoa.  It’s $15 (lame) and 21+ (lamer), but i really, really wanna go.  omg.

UPDATE 12-1-10

Copies of Issue #4 are now at Burger Records in Fullerton and Factory Records in Costa Mesa.  Go there, pick up a copy, and buy some records!  I’m not much of a vinyl man, myself, but even i have had to take advantage of both stores’ deals this past week and the cheapo bins at both.  Both places are great and will probably have just what you’re looking for and more.

Come to Acrobatics Everyday tomorrow @ UCI!  i will have copies of the zine there as well!  i’m sure Katie will have copies of her zine, Gather Dust to Build a Mountain, there as well!  also, here is the incredible line up for tomorrow night:

hey everyone!

so,

i finally finished Issue #4, and there are all sorts of new things going on. firstly, it’s the first issue to not deal with things happening in Orange County.  i have been looking to expand, so why not start with Washington and Ohio?  Exactly.  Read more about that in the zine.

There is also a new layout (kind of).  A new, cleaner front page.  a better (and easier to write and print and arrange on the page) page layout.  and that’s about it.

of course, i’ve already found a mistake, which i will clear up here:
1)  pg. 3 - “tome” should be “tom”.  i’m not entirely sure how i messed that up.
if you guys find anymore, lemme know and i’ll correct it on this site.

i just spent a good 45 minutes folding all the physical copies while sitting on my bed and eating a bagel, apples and peanut butter,  and listening to George Carlin’s Class Clown.  the copies will be at their usual places (Burger Records, Factory Records, Acrobatics Everyday shows @ UCI, and maybe a new place or two if i can find somewhere that’ll display ‘em).  You can always get a copy from me as well while supplies last.  :)

you’ll have to forgive me if i seem scattered right now, i’ve got quite a lot on plate with the last two weeks of school and everything.  anyways, i hope you all enjoy this issue!

p.s. - the story remains the same: if you wanna contact me or send me stuff to listen to or view or review, send it all to cooluncoolzine@gmail.com!  also, follow me on this tumblr and i’ll follow you and we’ll be tumblr friends.  oh, and tell all yr friends about this whole mess!

Update 11-17-10

i’ve started work on issue #4, which promises to be different from its predecessors.  i am excited.  i’m still debating whether or not i wanna keep the crappily drawn front cover or go for a more cleaned up cover.  it would be much, much easier and would probably look nicer.  thoughts?

in other news, the second issue of Gather Dust to Build a Mountain is out.  Katie Tilford did a great job (again) with this issue and it includes even more contributions from all sorts of people, including Sam Farzin, Paul McEldowney, and Sara Rara (of Lucky Dragons), among others.  I really dig it.  Come pick one up at the next Acrobatics Everyday event.

Speaking of which, Open Melody is this weekend!  See the post directly below this one for what that’s all about.  it’s gonna be real, real fun!  (also, i’m playing drums for Muddy Flowers for this show, so you should definitely come watch!)

that’s all for now.  expect an issue soon and other things i am excited for but will tell you about later!

Halloween 2010

as you probably know, there are a lot of things to do this Halloween weekend.  it’s a total bummer that the actual holiday is on Sunday, but for those of you willing to throw caution to the wind and party all weekend long, here are a few things you can do:

Friday, October 29th

Halloween / Brayden’s Birthday Party @ The Lovely Bad House in La Mirada.  Featuring Canyons, Cosmonauts, Black Elephant, The Lovely Bad Things, Dash Jacket, The Flytraps, and Audacity.  This house show is gonna be unbelievably rad.  It’s free and you should wear a costume.  byob.  Celebrating Halloween and Brayden’s (from LBTs) birthday!  come and be merry!

THE LOVELY BAD HOUSE
14420 Ermita, Ave
La Mirada, CA

Saturday, October 30th:

Party @ Joey’s Pad.  Featuring My Pet Saddle, Dahga Bloom, Cosmonauts, The Flytraps, and Mr. Elevator & the Brain Hotel!  Free, byob, all ages, etc.  starts at 7 PM.  Can’t go wrong with that line-up!

Joey’s Pad
248 Avenida Granada,
San Clemente, CA 92672

Sunday, October 31st (Halloween):

Alleged Party/Show at some DUDE’S HOUSE?
i thought there was supposed to be a show at some dude’s house this night (can anyone confirm this?) and i thought Wonder Wheel and Audacity were supposed to play.  i can’t find any info on this show now… ask around, maybe.

Halloween Madness @ green house
again, a little fuzzy on the details.  apparently bands start at 9, and it’s byob.  i can’t find any info on what bands are playing, though.  Perhaps this is the aforementioned ‘DUDE HOUSE’ show?  either way,

green house
550 South Harbor Blvd.
Anaheim, CA

perhaps we’ll see each other!  perhaps no one reads this site at all!

i’ll be getting more posts up soon, and i’m starting work on the next zine.  stick around.

Gather Dust

Gather Dust to Build a Mountain is the new zine from Katie Tilford (Bunnies in Space on KUCI, vocalist for Moon Pearlhttp://katietee.tumblr.com).  Featuring reviews, instructions on building a moss terrarium, photographs of the construction of the Tustin hangers, and more, Gather Dust is a super enjoyable read.  It looks absolutely lovely, too.  Free and beautiful—what more could you ask for?  I highly recommend you pick up a copy of the first issue if you can, and look for new issues in the future (they’ll be at Acrobatics Everyday @ UCI, though i’m not sure if you can find them elsewhere for now).  You can submit your own work as well at buildamountain@gmail.com!
